History of the Hungarian Forint
The Hungarian forint, or HUF, was established as the official currency of Hungary in 1946 after the former currency pengõ went through a period of hyperinflation. The creation of this new currency was crucial to stabilizing the economy of the country after World War II. The name "forint" is derived from Florence, which is where Hungary's golden money has been minted since 1252. One forint used to be the equivalent of 100 filler, but the filler was removed from circulation in 1999 due to a diminishing value. As a member of the European Union, Hungary plans to soon replace the forint with the euro as it remains the only ex-socialist European currency left in circulation. The change over to the euro is expected to occur between 2012 and 2014, depending on the economic situation at the time. Hungary may be the last country to adopt the euro though as debates about inflation have developed since 2005.
Historical British Pound Sterling to Hungarian Forint Conversion Rates
The value of the Hungarian forint remained fairly strong up until the late 1980s and early 1990s when the country decided to employ a market economy. This transition caused a significant deterioration of the Hungarian forint, dropping from a conversion rate of .01 GBP to HUF down to vastly lower numbers in recent years. The most noticeable jump happened from 1995 to 1998 when the conversion rate went from .0057 GBP to HUF to .0029 GBP to HUF. A lot of that was the result of bad economic times for the country, which they have since attempted to fix. Inflation became an issue for the country, with a peak of 35% in 1991. Though there have been some improvements made in recent years, the currency is still doing poorly in comparison to historic times, but is expected to get better.
Convert GBP to HUF - Recent Currency Exchange Rates
Within the lost ten years, the value of the Hungarian forint has seen some minor fluctuation. Some of the more recent currency exchange rates faired around .0029 GBP to HUF, which is a depreciation from some historic numbers. The worst year in recent history for the Hungarian forint was 2000, where the currency exchange rate was .0022 GBP to HUF. The best year was 2008 when those numbers jumped to .0037 GBP to HUF. Although the currency is currently in a historic downward trend, presently it is gaining in value based on recent records. The establishment of the euro in the future will have an effect on the value of the nation's currency in the future.
